Oak Island

The coast of North Carolina...one of my favorite places. Opa and Anne asked us to join them. Oh, and Murphy the dog, too.

Each day has been lovely with today as perhaps the most perfect. We began a trip to a farmers' market, an encounter with Jack Sparrow, and a little thrifting. Thrift and consignment stores are more plentiful here than freckles on my ample thighs. I found a Victorio Strainer for $15!!!!

After our shopping in the oppressive humidity, we rested in the cool of the condo and hit the beach at about 4pm...when the light is just becoming magical. I love taking pictures at this time of day. I've noticed that I haven't taken many pictures since the move...perhaps because it has been such a difficult transition for me...I didn't really want to document it. But the beach is a great place to take many pictures...except for the sand and the water and the people in bathing gear who become cranky when I start snapping away. Enjoy!

rocky mountain high

Can we agree that I have a couple of cutie friends? Especially compared to my flat-faced, big-headed, squinty-eyed self? And I didn't bring my big camera, just my phone...so....

Let's all just look at the beautiful mountains, shall we?

After talking and planning for 2 years, penciling it into our calendars at least 3 times, HC made it happen! About a month ago, my sweet high school besties and I spent 3 days in Estes Park, Colorado walking, shopping, talking, eating, and drinking. KK found great plane tickets and so we flew out of Dayton early Friday morning to Denver. HC, who has been a Rocky Mountain resident since 1992, picked us up. After quick passenger pick-up hugs, we hopped in her truck and drove an hour or so up into the mountains.

HC found a perfect little hotel that was a good walk outside of town which led to a wonderful, relaxing stay. What a sweet little town with funky gift boutiques, sweet shops, and plenty of good eats.

Each day we found a reason to stop here, the hotel that inspired the writing of The Shining.

KK could not get enough wildlife sightings to satisfy her, so we drove through Rocky Mountain National Park in the snow to spy elk or big-horn sheep or mule deer. Ironically, we saw more animals outside the park on the edge of town. We'd stop the car, get out, and carefully walk closer, all the while listening to KK's voice rise into her "animal stalking" mode.

The mountains were what took my breath away.

Here we are enjoying a little 'bucks along the Big Thompson creek.

{KK...you are the sweetest thing evah but you know I'm a little scared of you. I posted these pics anyway.}

Sunday afternoon, we bid farewell to Estes Park and drove to Pearl St. in Boulder. I could have stayed there longer, too...families and hipsters and buskers and those just plain down on their luck...moving in and out of shops and crowds. Perfect people watching.

But let's be real: the company was what I really came to see. There's nothing better than sitting down, yummy drink in hand, sharing silly stories and dreams together. Thank you, sweet friends...see you in Austin, 2015!

news

Why am I blogging again? I'm thinking it helps me process and remember and make decisions.

You know how I am about making decisions...I stew, I consult, I ask the woman cutting my hair what she thinks I should do {psshah, like I have my hair cut.}

Wisdom has taught me that if I'm not given a deadline, I ask for one, otherwise I hem and haw forever. Only Jesus and Sweet Man received an immediate and emphatic "yes." Every other decision is agonizing...for those around me.

In a matter of minutes, I will be finalizing the biggest decision I've made in a while...accepting a job offer with Classical Conversations.

I'm really excited.

Some words to describe my week of training in Virginia:
  • daunting
  • exhilarating
  • encouraging
  • fun
  • exhausting
  • nauseous
  • challenging
  • vision-casting
  • mind-blowing
  • glory-to-God giving
Can I tell you more later?

I'm on my way to listen to my new boss read Lamentations on Maundy Thursday. The night is dark, but the Son will rise again.

Where in the world?

A few days ago, I left home for a momma-off-on-her-own trip.

Road trips have been few and far between since Sweet Man has come back off the road.

It was interesting to travel sansenfants (say it real fast and wrinkle your nose, like I do) and determine whether or not I live up to this blog's name. I'm happy to report, that left on my own, I do.

I had a 6 1/2 hour trip and a tentative deadline. Once I realized that I was not going to make it to my destination on time, I slowed down. And wandered.

I stopped here...

...and here...

...and here.

A little yarn and a little hike on my road trip.
Perfect.
{Can you guess where I am?}

Uhmm, yeah, hi...again

He brought it up Thursday:: "We may be out of here by this weekend. So, anything you really want to do in this area, do it today."

The possibility that Sweet Man would be released from the Des Moines assignment was quickly becoming reality. Others in the office had already wrapped up their work and were moving on. He had to stick around until one certain colleague was finished and then he'd put in a few more hours and be done.

"Okay..."said I, calmly..."where to next?"

"Don't know, yet."

Friday:: "I talked to *Bob* and he said he expects me to be done this weekend."

"Okay, and...?"

"He's sending me home."

"Ha, hahahahahahaha, right.  {long pause} Really....wait, what about Earl? We just got here four days ago...we're getting into a groove. Can't we go to Ocracoke...and help with the roofs...no carnage, just flying shingles, please." {Ocracoke is one of my favorite places on the planet. Okay...I haven't been too many places, but really it is a fantastic and fun island. I'm glad they didn't get blown away.} So, really, where are we going?"

"Home. But...we can take our time and wander around on the way."

"But...I thought we'd be out in the field for a month or more. I bought loads of groceries. And we...don't...really have...a home, right now."

Saturday morning, oh, 11ish :: "*Mike's* just checked out. I have 2 more hours of work, but we need to be out of the hotel by noon. I'm coming home to help pack the car."...which meant I had to pack our stuff, stat.

Out by 11:30ish... the kids and I kicked around for a couple of hours...and we were eastbound at 3:30ish.

So, farewell, Iowa...again. It really is fun, road tripping...with two adults. And in glorious weather {wasn't it? Oh, I wish we were camping.} We drove into the night, stopping in Indiana at 2am...to wake in the morning and share a breakfast with dear friends. Then home-ish.

{Sounds dramatic, I know...there's that whole we-gave-our-house-away-for-a-month thing...but we have options, people...no worries. We're bunking in the Valley for the time being...and then my dad's house while he and my stepmom are in North Carolina, where she has a house. So, we might be seeing you soon.}

Wet and Wild

Life is so fun with a daddy {not just any daddy, our daddy} around. Even dentist appointments are better, which is what we did first thing the morning after he came home.

And then, he got to do chores and fix stuff around the house...welcome home, baby!!!! I even broke something extra while he was home...just so he'd have enough to do! Love you, baby!

Saturday was busy...as we squeezed in one last swim, covered the pool, packed, sort of cleaned for our gracious houseguests {with minimal yelling, I might add...sweet victory} and went to church.

Sunday morning, with an 8+ hour drive ahead of us, we left on time {hallelu!} with everything we needed {double hallelu!} Because I make lists obsessively and stayed awake most of the night before leaving, thinking to myself don't forget to, I even remembered to pick Bean's precious watermelon {which was a plant start from Cedar Falls adventures} and safely nestled it in the van.

Having Sweet Daddy traveling with us over the road was wonderful {usually he's travelling in the air.} He suggested that we have a little extra fun...stop at one of those Great Hairy-Beary/Cuckoo Key waterpark places. And you know me, I'm a sucker for such adventures. But as we drove {well, I slept, read, or knit...no driving for me this time} and contemplated driving two hours out of our way...Sweet Man had a {'nother} fantastic idea...about 8 hours into the drive:: we'd merely make a pit stop at G. J. Mecherle Park {aka:: St8 Pharm Park.}
What a place...bike trails, tennis & volleyball courts, picnic shelters, and a waterpark...but wait, because it is the corporate mothership, our admission was free. No pressure...stay and play as little or long as we wanted. Both babes jumped off a diving board for the first time...at first, with me treading water under the board...and later, smiling proudly from the side of the pool. After two and a half hours, we were sufficiently sunburned worn out.

We landed for the night in Coralville, IA {familiar territory as the kids and I enjoyed the Children's Museum there in May} and had a great night's sleep.

Now it's home, sweet, Des Moines. Our hotel room is huge...Sweet Man and I have our own room....We're unpacked and still have empty spaces. No pool here, but we need to give Bean's hair time to recover from the daily summer chlorine bath anyway...it feels like she's not only the Hair Club for Dolls president; she's also a client.

So, my afternoon will be spent belly-up to this laptop, researching the area...playgrounds, grocery stores, Chik-Fil-A...all the necessities.

Hittin' the road

Tomorrow morning will be here soon and the babes and I will be loading up and moving out. Pulling away from this really great town of Cedar Falls/Waterloo. What a great five weeks we've had. Gonna miss the cornfields...everywhere. Gonna miss the rhythm of our Iowa days.

Moving towards home. Towards family. Towards friends. Towards a fun weekend.

the Wedding

How do I even begin to tell you about this wedding without losing my questionable grip on decorum?

Bah...I'm just gonna tell you about this incredible wedding.

Oh, my word, it. was. grand.

this is the conservatory the day after the ceremony...without the arbor beautifully decorated with flowers...but it gives you an idea

Really, the bride and her family thought of everything and lavished it on the guests. Goody bags at hotel check-in. A birthday cake at the reception for one of the flower girls.

The ceremony was perfect...sentimental and poignant (those readings always get me;) structured, but rolled with the realities of the day (the priest was tardy, you see.) Most of all, it was joyous.

The significance of the seating of the guests had never occurred to me before this wedding. (And I swear, I am not stretching the metaphor for blog's sake...it really is what I was thinking during the ceremony.) We sat on Nick's side...and at first, I thought I wish I could see more of his face and his expressions. But it struck me that sitting behind him is meaningful. We are literally and figuratively behind the one with whom we have experience, history, familial ties:: this man that I've known since he toddled alongside his sisters is the one we entrust to this woman. The kid I've known all his life is a smart, compassionate, talented man and becoming a husband.  I was able to see the face of his beloved who I do not know as well. She gazed at him and whispered with a smile. Love emanated from her eyes. It was one of those moments where probably for them, it felt like no one else was in the room. But they graciously shared it with us.

Then the reception.... While the wedding party was posing for the last of the pictures, we were escorted into a cocktail hour. Drinks flowed and unbelievable hor d'oeuvres were passed by sassy servers. So fun....

I was able to catch up with some other cousins of Nick's who just recently lost their mother. I  suggested that we're not kind of cousins anymore but more like sisters in our experience. They may not want to claim me as theirs, but I'm not askin', I'm tellin'. I've always wanted a sister.

The wait staff gently ushered us into the beautiful ballroom where a four course meal was served throughout the evening, punctuated by dance breaks. Or maybe it was the other way around...dancing stopped so we could  eat?

I had new conversations with people I've known forever...but I got to know them better or differently...I love good conversation. We were seated at a table with some of my favorite people ever. I may have told them something to that effect...once or twice...the levels of mushy-o-city I reach after a glass of champagne....embarrassing, really.

She danced with her daddy to this song....

Yes, all of us, puddles on the floor.

He adores his bride...that is plain to see. Their love is fun to watch.

Much love and many blessings, Nick and Vanessa!

NYC

Sweet Man had never been to NYC...
and I had, exactly once...
so I, being the expert...patched together a plan.

We had little criteria...to do enough and not too much.

Plan A, didn't work out so much...plans B, C and D worked out just fine though.

Central Park Lake from East side

An east coast trip means inviting ourselves to our beloved friend's home. She and her husband take such good care of us and so many others in her life. Thank you, sweet Gail.

She graciously joined us in a letterboxing adventure...
remember the journey is the destination.

Hi, my name is...

Get real, I'm not going to tell you my name. Either you know it or don't, but we're keeping the thin veil of anonymity in place here in the blogosphere.

But to continue the phrase: My name is _________, and I'm an experienceholic.  Actually, that's one on a list of my addictions...but it's the one coming into focus today.

I am an indulgent mother...not with toys, clothing, treats {some would argue with that} or baths {egads, no.}

I'm talking 'bout fun...the pursuit of fun, really. Not simple, entertain-'em-with-a-cardboard-box or make-mudpies fun, not that there's anything wrong with that. I want to get my children out of the house/hotel, spare our hotel neighbors, and DO something we don't often have a chance to do. I indulge my children in experiences.

...and I want to take pictures of it. Oops, this forum could be part of the problem.

This addiction manifests itself once or twice a week. I get an itch to do something fun. Here I am, often in unfamiliar territory, usually in a 200 sq. ft. room, with my window on the world aka: laptop and a little too much time on my hands. Upon arriving in unfamiliar territory, I begin to link into local event schedules for children, preferably free, but I'll consider those with a small fee. A little bit of effort is rewarded.

Right now, it is the metaphorical New Years Eve of fun activities...this fall/harvest/pumpkin/Halloween time. My addiction is flaring up... tempting fun is easy to find. The weather is beautiful. It is the culmination of agri-entertainment's year of labor. There are loads of activities here in Cincinnati for those who have a little money and scads of time. On one of the event sites, there is even a handy little icon that links the event directly to my Google calendar...too easy.

And of course, when one acknowledges an addiction, soul-searching follows. Why am I this way? and How will this affect my children?

I may have an answer for the first question. I am consciously trying to restrain the whining...but as rich as my childhood experiences were, they were repeated. I was born, grew up, graduated from college, and still have a home all within a 15 mile area. Wonderful in many ways, but....

Take my summers...spent at our family business, a swimming pool...we swam, we ran through the woods, we picnicked, we worked, we forged life-long relationships, we had fun. It was idyllic and I would give my left eye to have that place back.

But that's where we were every summer. Every birthday party I had up until the age of 22? was held there. We rarely traveled anywhere and when we did, it was to usually to camp within the radius of an hour's drive. Childhood experiences were deep but not broad.

So I am taking this life on the road and running with it...I am bound and determined to soak up the life wherever we are. And expose our family to the encounters specific to each new area.

However, we don't know anyone in these places...we don't have play dates or sleepovers. No childcare, no coffee with a friend. We pack our schedules with those activities when we can...that's the big fun at home. Here, it's up to me to find enriching entertainment. Otherwise we sit in a hotel room staring at each other or a TV.

I don't yet know the effect on the kids. Sweet Daddy and I have to keep evaluating that. I don't want to establish a need or expectation of big entertainment all the time.

All that to say, here are the photos from some recent adventures, yesterday. And true to my word, there were no pumpkins involved.

And now for something completely different

Thanks for reading (if you did) yesterday. Transparency...I need it.

Anywho, we are heading to Cincy again today. Actually we meant to get there last night, but there was too much to do. Sweet Daddy is already there. We will join him this evening and stay until Friday or Saturday.

Today we pack...this trip is shorter, therefore packing is easy peasy. The kids each have their own suitcases and we use these handy-dandy laminated packing lists to help them be a bit more independent. That is the goal, is it not? To raise adults. To work myself out of a job.

I cannot take credit for this...I snagged the idea from house on hill road....

We pack for trips often. For each trip, we determine what each child needs to bring and fill in the amounts. I've already filled out Bean's and Bug will fill in his during school time ;) I didn't include books and toys on our lists because we pack those separately. And we have toothbrushes stashed everywhere: our house, my shower kit, the camping box, each grandparents' house, and the car. We're not always brushing; it's just that I have forgotten toothbrushes too many times.

By the by, do you local peeps know that we have a gem at our branch of OSU?  The Educational Resource Center has laminating and Ellison machines to use for free or cheap. They also have a pretty neat library. It's located in Hopewell Hall.

with Opa

Happy Friday! Here we are...up in East Harbor State Park, near Sandusky, on the banks of the Great Lake Erie. My dad has been here since Monday. We are just staying tonight.

We have spectacular weather today, a full-up fridge, and a promise of a campfire tonight....

And my girl is back with me after 4 days...she's asked me to stop telling her how much I missed her. And I do believe she had a fantastic time with Grammy and Grandpa. I bet they're napping as I type. Whew!

On our drive up, today, we happened upon a fun General Store in Olivesburg...old-fashioned candy, Amish furniture, interesting things. Here are the kids, each with their candies of choice. Yes, it was about 10 o'clock this morning and yes, I'm a superb parent.

The kids and I have already been to see the glacial grooves that are exposed in this state park.  But the most famous ones are over on Kelley's Island. Tomorrow we'll probably head over there or do something else tourist-y. I'm driving my dad and husband crazy outlining the planning options for tomorrow.

They all went off for a walk to the camp store and I find myself here alone, half-wondering when my momma is going to get back from wherever she is with a plan for dinner.

Ooo, I smell campfires already. I really think I could become a full-time camper. I love this.

greetings from effingham

I sure am wordy these days, huh? But I'm in this "time is moving so fast...I don't want to miss anything" stage and so some posts are just for me...but you can enjoy them, too.

We did indeed leave Wichita this morning...9am, but we managed to squeeze in another hour at the children's museum and a farewell trip to the Y on Monday. Here are pics if you're interested.

Slide at the Y

I called this a karate machine, but it's really a kickboxing machine...three towers with three pads each. A pad lights up and an alarm sounds and you punch or kick...fun!

And now after a long day in the car, we made it to my goal destination ~550 miles today. These babes of mine are road warriors...we played our own version of Grandma J's "find it" game...we looked for flags, crosses, and oil "bumpers" (or wells.) We added Port-a-Potty's through the construction zones. Tally, so far, is Bean 16, Bug 21.

The first leg of our trip was through some of the most beautiful land I've ever seen...other people think so to. It's called "The Flint Hills." Breathtaking. Take a look. (And yes, that is my sunroof....)

Green rolling, hills and cattle as far as the eye can see...seriously, no houses or other roads...pristine.

This is the cattle bridge over I-35 with cattle pens on either side.
Yes, a bridge for the cows to cross the highway.

As we got closer to our destination, I kinda ruled out getting a hotel with a pool. This momma has had enough swimming for a while...hard to believe. So I "VZ navigated" for a park and found a perfect one for getting wiggles out.

Long day...neither Bean nor I slept well last night. Now, baths and bed. Ahhh....

St. Louis

Editorial note: the "gag" order has expired. At the beginning of this blog thingy, I asked you to refrain passing on the address to others...I was being shy and decidedly childish...but let's get real...anyone is welcome...just continue to extend grace to moi.

We traveled today and have landed in St. Louis...right on schedule. It helps that we lost...or gained...an hour...how does it work? Whatever...St. Louis time is one hour less than it says on my van's clock.

Bean was sleeping when we crossed into the city and saw the Arch on the horizon. Bug and I decided to not pass up the tourist opportunity, so we found a parking spot and woke her up. Not knowing much about it, I asked Bug if he wanted to go up inside the Arch if we could. He asked if there were stairs or elevators...."Don't know. Let's find out," I said.  To which he replied, "If it's an elevator, we might have to go upside down." Pretty logical.

It was an excursion just right to get the wiggles out.  One hour and $20 later, we had walked around a lovely park, pottied, traveled up the tram into the Arch, and gazed out at the Mississippi River and city from the observation deck. There are 2 trams with tiny, 5 seated "pods" that go up each side and unload passengers at the observation deck...in case you're wondering. (Mimi, you would have had the willies in that pod.)

So glad we stopped. Bug was really excited and thanked me frequently from the top of the Arch until we arrived back at the van...pleasantly uncharacteristic and well worth it.

Tonight we're staying at a Hampton Inn just west of St. Louis...very nice. After a swim and a little hot tubbin' (and a few tantrums from Miss Bean,) we are tucked in. We'll see Sweet Daddy after a 6 hour drive tomorrow. I hope I remember that I do not need to nosh continually each one of those 360 minutes.

Our plan is to stay in Wichita for 2 or 3 weeks and then the kids and I head home, even if Sweet Daddy moves on to another assignment. I don't want to get too far away from home.

The Call

Some of you may know that I don't make a habit of answering my phone when it is 7 inches away, much less leaving one ear open at all times, leaping over small people, jettisoning toys, pillows, etc. But we've been listening for ringing phones frequently of late. And Sweet Man's "work phone" rang Monday at 3:15 pm and we both stopped and looked.

It seems that some folks in Wichita, KS need the company's help...he boarded a plane today at 9am. (I make it sound terribly thrilling, don't I? Have I mentioned I'm itchin' to hit the road?) Now I need to gather all the belongings I've squirreled away in three houses, sort, and pack. Oooh, and complete the important task of tracking down a Kansas charm for my bracelet. Meh, not crazy about it really. You can laugh, if you wanna...but not too much...take a peek at our accommodations.

Don't know when we're leaving...it's a 14 hour drive (so much different then that 20 hr trip before,) so we will be back and forth a bit more so we can keep up with Mimi.

And of course, pieces of my heart will stay here.

Tap, tap, tap...how long?

While being away for a mere two months, I looked forward to coming home. And I have loved being home for the most part. It surprised me how difficult the logistics have been: where should we sleep tonight, where are the mittens, what can I cook for dinner in a pared down kitchen, how do I catch up on relationships and activities I've missed and not squeeze out normal "home" days, etc? These little questions tangled me up, confused me, and sometimes brought me low.

I miss my love. Life is easier, sweeter, better with him. It has been different being apart this time. The holding pattern continues. We've wondered how long his assignment would have to be to make it worth it for us to travel three days? I think we have our answer. We're going on three weeks, which is not the longest, but it seems it.

Life is different but somehow more harmonious out there. My priority, other than keeping us alive, is to make Sweet Man's life most efficient. With him working 12-13 hours a day, 6 days a week, he needs that. (I know there are so many out  there who have that same challenge.) We try to protect the time we have together as a family by getting the mundane out of the way so that we can adventure together, or at least relax.

I'm ready to get back to it, that rhythm of life. Choosing to push the "easy" button on some things (ie: cooking) to maximize time with my babes and my sweet man. It's what I've asked God to do for me: show me how to engage in the moments to the fullest with these people I get to know. Pull in tighter, keeping our eyes on Our Savior, so that whether we are "at home" or out in the world, we are peaceful and purposeful. I crave that.

So, I'm ready to hit the road again. Don't get me wrong...I adore you Ohio folk, but I've been here a while, biding time. It was so momentous for me to pack up the house and move out to go to Texas...it really seemed so permanent. Big giant steps. When I pulled out of our driveway that December morning, I kinda thought I wouldn't see this house again. Seems silly now really. Because, here we are. At church, more than a few people have said to me, "You're still here? I thought you were gone...." Yeah, I know. But I'm not quite here, either.
